Bali in April

April is the hinge of the Bali year, and the normals show the door swinging: March averages 234 mm of rain, April averages 88, a collapse of two thirds in one page of the calendar, in the only station level normals published for Denpasar by BMKG via the WMO. No other month-to-month step in the year comes close. The island dries out in weeks, while the landscape is still wearing January's green, and that combination is April's entire argument.

The numbers, and where they come from

Beyond the 88 mm over 9 rain days of the old normals, the modern gridded series reads April at 131 mm, the largest gap between the two records in the year, which is honest to say: April is the month where the wet season's tail varies most from decade to decade. The airport's own log reports rain on about 8 days in an average modern April. The recomputed temperature mean is 28.2 °C, the warmest of the year alongside November, and BMKG's 2026 outlook had the dry season starting early, with April the standard onset month for a sixth of Indonesia's climate zones. Arrivals sit almost exactly on the yearly average, index 102, with hotels at 57 percent.

What April is actually like

Dry season light on wet season scenery. The rice terraces around Ubud and Sidemen are still deep green, the waterfalls still carry volume, and the afternoon storm becomes an event rather than a rhythm. The heat is real: the year's warmest mean plus lingering humidity makes April and November the two sweat-through-your-shirt months, and the hill towns earn their altitude.

The Lebaran variable

April's crowds depend on a calendar that walks eleven days earlier each year. In 2025, Idul Fitri fell on 31 March and 1 April and made April the biggest domestic month of the year, 1.1 million Indonesian arrivals, in the province's statistics. In 2026 and 2027 the holiday lands in March, and April keeps only the ordinary flow. A page written from 2025's numbers alone would tell you to avoid an April crush that has already moved house; this one tells you to check where Lebaran falls in your year, because that single date decides whether April is average or heaving.

The sea

The waves begin their build toward the mid year peak, the modelled transition running around 1.7 m, and the wind starts its swing to the dry season's offshore east. Surf works on both coasts in the changeover weeks. The west coast beaches shed the last of the debris season as the west wind dies.

The calendar

In 2026, Saraswati on 4 April and Pagerwesi on 8 April, knowledge and inner strength in the Balinese cycle, visible as ceremonies at every school and family temple: dispensation days in the Governor's circular, atmosphere rather than closures. Good Friday and Easter follow as national holidays.

Who April suits, and who it does not

Travellers who want the dry season before the dry season prices, photographers who want green fields under blue sky, and heat tolerant itineraries. It does not suit anyone who wilts at the year's warmest humidity, nor, in Lebaran years, anyone surprised by Indonesia on holiday. Check the date, then take the hinge month with both hands.
