When to go

Bali in May

The dry season opens: reliable sun, the west coast surf waking up, and the last calm before the school holiday crowds.

May is the year's first properly dry month most years, and the island noticeably changes gear. The southeast trades settle in, humidity drops a step, and the long dry season machine, surf, boat trips, volcano sunrises, starts running on schedule.

The window

Between the wet season's end and the arrival of the June school holiday wave sits a window of several weeks with dry season weather and shoulder season crowds. May owns most of it. Accommodation still negotiates, the famous viewpoints are manageable at midday, and the sunrise trek at Kintamani comes with clearer odds than at any point since October.

Surf and sea

This is the west coast's cue. The reef breaks of Uluwatu and the beach breaks of Canggu begin their best months, with offshore mornings the norm. Sea conditions calm across the board: crossings to Nusa Penida are at their most comfortable.

Who May suits

Surfers, divers, trekkers, and anyone who wants the dry season without its queues. If June to September set the standard, May delivers most of it early and cheaper.
