Bali in October
The second hinge: humidity builds, the first storms return late, and the island offers dry season assets at shoulder prices.

October is the year's other hinge, and its shape is April run backwards: 63 mm over 12 rain days in the only official normals for Denpasar, from BMKG via the WMO, double September's rain but a third of November's. The dry season does not end in October; it frays, afternoon by afternoon, and the month sells dry season assets at shoulder season attendance.
The numbers, and where they come from
The modern gridded series reads October at 71 mm, agreeing with the old normals on the shape; the airport's log reports rain on about 5 days in an average modern October, barely more than the deep dry months. Temperature mean 27.6 °C and climbing toward the November top. Arrivals 594,853 in October 2025, index 103, hotels at 65 percent, and one quiet superlative in the provincial statistics: October and November share the year's longest average stays, 2.94 nights, the calendar's signature months for travellers rather than escapers.
What October is actually like
September's weather with clouds rehearsing in the afternoons. The mornings stay reliable deep into the month, the first real storms tend to arrive late, and the landscape begins its turn from dry brown toward the wet season's green. The domestic calendar is at its emptiest, October is the Indonesian trough, 652,753 domestic arrivals in 2025, so the ferries, roads and warungs run at their calmest national rhythm of the year.
The sea
The transition band: modelled swell around 2.1 m into the season's turn, the wind begins its swing back toward the west, and the surf coasts start to swap polarity. Early October still surfs like the dry season on the Bukit; late October begins to favour the east. Snorkel mornings stay excellent on the east coast, and the Penida crossings remain gentle before the west monsoon returns.
The calendar
In 2026, Saraswati falls on Saturday 31 October, the day of knowledge, closing the month with offerings on every book and keyboard on the island, with Pagerwesi following on 4 November: dispensation days from the Governor's circular, ceremony without closure. No national holiday interrupts October, which is part of why the month stays quiet.
Who October suits, and who it does not
The same travellers September serves, minus a little certainty, plus a little solitude: couples, divers, photographers who want drama building in the afternoon sky, and long-stay travellers, who measurably choose it already. It does not suit the sunshine guarantee crowd, who have September one page back, or the green island seekers, whose months begin one page forward in November. The hinge months reward travellers who like weather as an event; October is the better tempered of the two.
