One week in Bali, first visit
Three registers, two moves: four nights in Ubud for the interior, three on the Bukit for the cliffs, and the honesty to skip the north rather than spend the week on the road.
This is the plan for a first visit that wants the island's three registers, coast, culture and cliffs, without spending half the week in a car. It makes one structural choice that most first timer plans refuse to make: it skips the north entirely. Lovina, the highland lakes and the far east are better served by their own trip than by six hours of round trip road.
The shape
Three bases, two moves. Four nights inland in Ubud, then three on the Bukit around Uluwatu. One transfer day in the middle, nothing else over an hour.
Days 1 to 4: Ubud and the interior
Land, transfer inland, and let the first day be a walk and an early night: the arrival formalities are covered in everything you must pay to enter, and jet lag is better spent in a garden than a beach club.
Day two is the town itself, palace, market, and a dance performance in the evening. Day three goes north: the terraces at Tegallalang before nine, then the ridge walk or a long lunch over the Sayan valley. Day four is the day trip east, the valley of Sidemen under Agung, which most one week plans miss and regret.
Day 5: the move south
The transfer from Ubud to the Bukit crosses the island's worst traffic. Leave mid morning, plan on the road time being double the map's promise, and treat the day as a half day: pool, sunset from the cliff, nothing scheduled.
Days 5 to 7: Uluwatu and the Bukit
One beach day below the cliffs, Padang Padang or Bingin, one temple evening for the kecak at sunset, and one open day that surf, spa or simply the pool will claim. If you ride a scooter for any of it, read the permit question and the insurance clause before the key changes hands: the Bukit's distances make riding tempting and its hills punish casual decisions.
What this plan gives up
The north and its waterfalls, Nusa Penida, which deserves an overnight rather than a rushed day trip, and the beach resort week: this is a moving plan, not a horizontal one. If a boat day matters more than a cliff evening, trade the Bukit's open day for the Penida crossing from Sanur, and accept the early start.
