Bali in July

July is Bali at maximum occupancy. The weather is the year's most reliable, the wind its strongest, and every system on the island, roads, restaurants, boats, runs at capacity. Nothing about the month is a secret, which is precisely its character.

Wind and kites

The dry season trades peak now, which shapes the month. Mornings are offshore on the reef breaks; afternoons blow out. Over Sanur and the east coast paddies, the sky fills with kites, some of them enormous: kite season is a Balinese institution, and the big festival, whose dates move with the wind, usually lands in July or August.

Managing the peak

Distances stretch in July. The Canggu shortcut, slow in February, becomes a parking lot; viewpoint queues are real; Kelingking at ten in the morning is a procession. The counter moves are structural: sleep near what you want to do, do it early, and consider the quieter corners, Sidemen, Munduk, Amed, that absorb July better than the southwest does.

Who July suits

Anyone bound to school calendars, and travellers who want the island at its most festive and do not mind paying for it. Book everything early.
