Central highlands, Buleleng
Ridge village in the northern mountains, among coffee and clove plantations. Cool, often clouded, with waterfalls in the surrounding ravines.
Munduk is a mountain village on the old Dutch road through the northwest highlands, surrounded by clove trees, coffee gardens and more waterfalls per walking hour than anywhere else on the island. It is cool, wet and green, and it asks for walking shoes rather than sandals.
Where it is
In the hills of Buleleng, above the twin lakes of Tamblingan and Buyan, roughly two and a half hours from the airport. The altitude sits near 800 metres: evenings need a layer, and cloud is part of the scenery.
The waterfalls
The slopes below the village hold a chain of falls, Munduk, Melanting, GitGit further east and Banyumala over the ridge, linked by paths through spice gardens. Most are reached on foot in under an hour, which is the correct way to meet them.
The character
A one-road village of guesthouses in old plantation houses, warungs serving what the hills grow, and trekking guides who actually walk. Mornings are clear, afternoons cloud over, and the temperature never bullies you.
Who it suits
Walkers, couples escaping the coastal heat, and anyone who orders coffee where it grows. It suits neither beach plans nor travellers who wilt without sun on demand.
