Galungan and Kuningan 2027: the Dates, and What Closes in Bali

Galungan comes round every 210 days, so 2027 has two. The January pair has a government estimate behind it. The August pair has a private calendar.

When is Galungan in 2027?

The January dates are printed in Pasal 18 ayat 2 of decree B.10.400.3/5892/UPTD.BPTP/DIKPORA, the 2026/2027 school calendar issued by Bali's education office, Disdikpora, dated "Bali, 23 April 2026". The decree files them under its own heading:

Perkiraan Hari Libur Khusus Tahun 2027 (menunggu Surat Edaran Gubernur Provinsi Bali, tentang libur khusus hari-hari besar keagamaan bagi Umat Hindu di Bali)

Estimated special holidays for 2027, pending the Governor of Bali's circular. The document is official, and it calls its own dates an estimate. It lists Penampahan Galungan, Galungan, Umanis Galungan and Kuningan. Penampahan Kuningan, 22 January, is missing from it, so that one day rests on Kalender Bali's day-by-day calendar alone.

The August dates come only from Kalender Bali Digital, a private calendar with a copyright registration (C00201000668). It files them under "HARI FAKULTATIF", its optional-day list, and not under "HARI LIBUR". The school decree cannot reach them, since its school year ends on 12 June 2027, and no government document found by 10 September 2026 lists them.

The 210 days are arithmetic anyone can redo. From Wednesday 17 June 2026 to Wednesday 13 January 2027 is 210 days; from there to Wednesday 11 August 2027 is 210 more. Each Kuningan falls ten days after its Galungan, on a Saturday. Kalender Bali gives the Pawukon names: Galungan is Buda Kliwon Dungulan, Kuningan is Saniscara Kliwon Kuningan. The sum checks the dates. It decrees nothing.

When was Galungan in 2026?

The last settled pair. Section 3 of the Governor of Bali's circular No. B.30.800.1.6.2/61594/PK/BKPSDM, signed by Governor Wayan Koster on 6 October 2025, lists five days:

• Tuesday 16 June 2026, Penampahan Galungan
• Wednesday 17 June, Galungan
• Thursday 18 June, Umanis Galungan
• Friday 26 June, Penampahan Kuningan
• Saturday 27 June, Kuningan

That was the year's only Galungan. June in Bali covers the month around it.

Is Galungan a public holiday in Bali?

No. Galungan and Kuningan appear in neither list of the joint ministerial decree that set Indonesia's 2026 calendar, SKB No. 1497, 2 and 5 of 2025. They are not national holidays and not cuti bersama. Three other instruments give the days a label, and no two labels match.

The national label is optional leave. Circular B-253/DJ.VI/Dt.VI.I.3/BA.03/09/2025 of the Hindu affairs directorate of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Ditjen Bimas Hindu) classes all five 2026 days as libur fakultatif. As detik quotes it, the leave is for employees, civil servants and TNI and Polri members "yang beragama Hindu agar dapat melaksanakan upacara keagamaan": who are Hindu, so that they can perform the ceremonies. detik adds that the leave is flexible and applied by each institution's internal policy. Whether that sentence is the circular's or detik's paraphrase cannot be told, because the ministry's server never answered.

Bali's label is holiday and dispensation. Section 3 of the Governor's circular gives its purpose first and the days after it:

Hari libur dan Dispensasi pada Hari Raya Suci Hindu di Bali Tahun 2026 dimaksudkan agar umat Hindu di Bali dapat melaksanakan hari raya suci keagamaan sesuai dengan swadarmanya, dengan demikian dipandang perlu untuk memberikan libur dan dispensasi pada hari-hari sebagai berikut:

The days are intended to let Hindus in Bali observe the holy days according to their religious duty, and so holiday and dispensation are granted on the days listed. That is a purpose. Beyond it, the circular does not say who takes the days off. It also does not say which days are holiday and which are dispensation. Its addressees include "Pimpinan BUMN, BUMD, dan Perusahaan Swasta se-Bali", so private companies are named.

Schools have a third label, libur khusus. Pasal 1 angka 10 of the Disdikpora decree defines it as a holiday held for a religious observance, among other causes, set by the regional government outside the general holidays. It is the category the 2027 estimate uses. Pasal 18 lists the days as school holidays, with no group of pupils named: on those days the schools close.

What stays open during Galungan?

Clause 4 of the Governor's circular is the only operative sentence in any text read for this page that says what happens to services:

4. Unit kerja/satuan organisasi/lembaga/perusahaan yang berfungsi memberikan pelayanan langsung kepada masyarakat yang mencakup kepentingan masyarakat luas, seperti rumah sakit, pusat kesehatan masyarakat, lembaga yang memberikan pelayanan telekomunikasi, listrik, air minum, pemadam kebakaran, keamanan dan ketertiban, perbankan, perhubungan, dan unit kerja/satuan organisasi/lembaga/perusahaan lain yang sejenis, agar mengatur penugasan pegawai/karyawan/pekerja pada hari Libur Nasional, Cuti Bersama, dan Dispensasi Hari Raya Suci Hindu Bali Tahun 2026, sesuai dengan ketentuan peraturan perundang-undangan.

Hospitals, community health centres, telecoms, electricity, drinking water, fire brigades, security, banking, transport and similar services are told to arrange staff rosters on the dispensation days. The instruction is to stay staffed. It sets no minimum level of service, no penalty, and no opening hours.

For shops, restaurants and tours, no instrument decides. The circular is addressed to private companies among others, and orders none of them to close.

No order closing a road for Galungan turned up in any source.

When will the 2027 dates be official?

They were not official on 10 September 2026. The home and announcements pages of Kemenko PMK, the coordinating ministry that publishes the joint decree, carried no 2027 SKB, and no 2027 circular from the Governor had been issued. One regional news site headlines a 2027 list "based on the SKB"; its page refused every fetch, and the ministry's site shows nothing to match it.

Last year's timing is the only guide. The ministers' meeting on the 2026 SKB was held on Friday 19 September 2025, and the Governor signed Bali's 2026 circular on Monday 6 October 2025. Neither authority is bound to repeat those dates. The national decree did not list Galungan last year; Bali's circular did, and the school calendar's 2027 estimate says it is waiting for the Governor's. This page is re-checked weekly until it appears.

Nyepi 2027 waits on the same documents. January and August cover the rest of those two months.

What we could not establish

Whether government offices in Bali close on Galungan. No instrument read orders it. The Governor's circular mentions civil servants once, in clause 6, and only for cuti bersama: "Pelaksanaan Cuti Bersama bagi Aparatur Sipil Negara dilakukan sesuai dengan ketentuan peraturan perundang-undangan." Galungan is not a cuti bersama day. No provincial civil service circular for the June 2026 Galungan was found.

The Bimas Hindu circular itself. bimashindu.kemenag.go.id timed out on 17 August and 10 September 2026, and no archived copy turned up. Its classification and wording reach this page through detik's reporting only.

Whether Penampahan Kuningan 2027 will be a Bali dispensation day. It was one in 2026, on 26 June. The school estimate leaves it out, and so does Kalender Bali's "HARI FAKULTATIF" (optional-day) list, for January and August alike.

Road closures. No order from Polda Bali, the transport agency or the provincial government was found, and a Tribun Bali report on police at the Wanagiri junction on Umanis Galungan could not be opened.

Bank hours. Clause 4 tells banks to roster staff. No OJK or bank notice was checked.

Temple visiting rules. No rule, temple or hour for visitors during Galungan was found in any instrument.

The circular's original file. The provincial host, ppid.baliprov.go.id, no longer resolved on 10 September 2026. The text quoted here was read from a copy forwarded by Buleleng regency and held on Google Drive, as page images, since the scan has no text layer. The copy carries the electronic-signature QR code and the verification footer pointing to tte.komdigi.go.id/verifyPDF. It matches row for row a reading of the provincial original made on 17 August 2026. The signature itself was not checked at that address.

The school decree's original file. The copy read is re-hosted on Google Drive, produced with PDFill on 8 May 2026 and stamped on every page with a "komunitasbelajar.id" watermark. It is dated "Bali, 23 April 2026" and shows no signatory. Disdikpora's own page returned 404 on 17 August 2026. This page relies on the decree's content, not on that copy's form.

Any official document for August 2027. There is none yet, estimate or otherwise.
