Lovina travel guide

Lovina is the north coast's counterproposal: calm dark sand, water without surf, and a pace set by Singaraja next door rather than by tourism. It is the furthest major beach area from the airport, and it behaves like it.

Where it is

On the north coast in Buleleng regency, west of Singaraja, roughly three hours from the airport across the mountains. The road itself, through the lakes and passes, is one of the arguments for coming.

The sea

The Bali Sea here is usually flat. Swimming is easy, the sand is volcanic grey to black, and the reef snorkelling is a boat ride out rather than off the beach.

The dolphin question

Lovina's signature is the dawn dolphin fleet, and honesty requires both halves: dolphins are genuinely resident offshore, and the daily scrum of boats pursuing them is crowded enough that some travellers regret joining it. Operators who idle at distance exist; choosing one is the difference between the two experiences.

The character

A low-rise strip of guesthouses and warungs, Buleleng's own life carrying on around it, waterfalls and hot springs in the hills behind. Evenings are quiet by ten.

Who it suits

Travellers rounding the island, families wanting calm water without resort walls, and anyone pairing the north's waterfalls with a beach. It does not suit short trips anchored in the south: the transfer eats the day.
