Nusa islands, Klungkung

Largest of the three islands off the south-east coast, reached by fast boat from Sanur. Limestone cliffs, rough interior roads, few sealed lanes.

Nusa Penida is the island in the photographs: the Kelingking headland, the arch at Broken Beach, the pool at Angel's Billabong. What the photographs do not show is the travel between them. Penida is large, steep and rough, and the gap between the pictures and the roads is the single most useful thing to know before booking a boat.

Where it is, and getting there

Penida lies southeast of Bali across the Badung strait, with fast boats leaving mainly from Sanur. The crossing itself is short, well under an hour in normal conditions, and the sea state varies with the season. Boats are a competitive, changing market: treat any specific schedule or price found online as unverified until dated.

The roads

This is the honest core of any Penida guide. Outside the harbour strip, roads narrow to a lane and a half, climb steeply, and break up without warning. Riders with real experience manage; new riders regularly do not, and the clinics see the results weekly. Most visitors do better hiring a car with a driver for the day and letting someone local absorb the road.

What you come for

The west holds the famous trio, Kelingking, Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong, plus Crystal Bay for the sunset. The east has Diamond Beach and Atuh. Under the water, Manta Point delivers what its name promises, and the channel drift dives are serious diving. Distances between all of these are longer than any map suggests.

Day trip or stay

The standard day trip compresses four hours of driving into a schedule built for photographs. Staying one or two nights inverts the experience: the sites at opening time, the harbour crowds gone by dusk. If Penida matters to your trip, sleep on it.
