Sanur travel guide

Sanur is the calm side of south Bali. It faces east, wakes to sunrise rather than sunset, and its sea is flattened by a reef into a lagoon that small children and elderly swimmers can actually use. Nothing about it is wild, and that is precisely its offer.

Where it is

On the east coast of the southern isthmus, fifteen minutes from Denpasar and directly opposite Nusa Penida. It is also the main harbour for the fast boats: most trips to Nusa Penida start here.

The seafront

A paved path runs the length of the beach, roughly five kilometres of it, past jukung outriggers, warungs and hotel gardens. It is flat, shaded in stretches, and equally used by joggers at dawn and cyclists all day. The water inside the reef is calm at any tide; the reef line itself is where the current lives.

The character

Sanur has been a resort town since before mass tourism and it shows in the best way: mature trees, settled hotels, restaurants that have fed two generations. The crowd is families and longer stays. Nightlife means dinner.

Who it suits

Families with small children, first-morning-in-Asia recovery, and anyone staging a Penida crossing. Surfers and night owls will be happier west in Canggu or Kuta.
