Canggu travel guide

Canggu was a string of rice-field villages a decade ago and is now the fastest changing place on the island. It is the centre of remote work in Bali, a surf town with forgiving waves, and a building site, all at once. Whether you love it depends almost entirely on which lane you sleep in.

The lie of the land

The coast runs northwest from Seminyak towards Tanah Lot: Berawa, then Batu Bolong, then Echo Beach, then Pererenan. The sand is black, the waves are beach breaks, and each strip has its own character. Berawa leans to beach clubs, Batu Bolong to the cafe and coworking crowd, Echo Beach to surf, and Pererenan holds what remains of the quiet.

The surf

The breaks here are sandy-bottomed and forgiving, which makes Canggu one of the better places on the island to learn, and one of the more crowded places to progress. Mornings before eight belong to surfers, the rest of the day to everyone.

The traffic problem

Distances in Canggu are short and journeys are not. The lanes were built for villages, the famous shortcut is single-vehicle wide in places, and the whole area moves at walking pace at peak hours. Choose accommodation by where you will actually spend your days, not by the map's optimism.

Who it suits

Remote workers, surfers, and anyone who wants breakfast options measured in dozens. Those seeking the Bali of rice terraces and ceremony should look at Ubud or Sidemen, or at least sleep in Pererenan.
