East coast, Karangasem
Small port town, the ferry and fast boat departure point for Lombok and the Gili islands. Sheltered bay with dive sites either side.
Padangbai is a working harbour that happens to sit on a pretty bay: ferries to Lombok on one side, fast boats to the Gilis loading on the other, and between sailings a small town of dive shops and warungs that most visitors only see from a boat queue.
Where it is
On the east coast in Karangasem, about eighty minutes from the airport. It is the island's main sea gateway east: the slow car ferry and most Gili and Lombok fast boats leave from here.
Beyond the harbour
The ten-minute walk over either headland changes the town. North lies Blue Lagoon, a pocket cove with snorkelling straight off the sand; south, Bias Tugel's white sand hides behind the ridge. The harbour bay itself is for boats, not swimming.
The diving
Padangbai's dive shops work the channel sites, Blue Lagoon for training, the drift dives towards Penida for certification and up. It is one of the cheaper places on Bali to learn, precisely because it is a working town rather than a resort.
The character
Transit towns are honest: porters, ticket touts, warungs timed to sailings. Stay a night and it relaxes visibly once the last boat leaves.
Who it suits
Divers, budget travellers pausing between islands, and anyone with an early boat. Few would build a week here, and the town does not expect them to.
What we have not verified
Boat operators, schedules and ticket pricing change constantly and attract more misinformation than any other subject on this coast. Dated findings will get their own rule page.
