Candidasa travel guide

Candidasa is the east coast's quiet base: a small strip of hotels around a lotus lagoon, thin beaches behind sea walls, and the real east Bali starting immediately behind it. You stay here for what is around it as much as for the town itself.

Where it is

On the east coast road in Karangasem, about ninety minutes from the airport and twenty past Padangbai. It makes a natural overnight on any round-island route.

The shore

Honesty first: the beaches are modest. Erosion took the sand decades ago and groynes hold what remains, with pockets like Pasir Putih up the coast doing the postcard work. The compensation is the water itself, clear and calm, and snorkelling day trips to the islets offshore.

Around it

Tenganan, one of the original Bali Aga walled villages, sits ten minutes inland with its double-ikat weaving. Goa Lawah, the bat cave temple, is just down the coast. The lanes behind town climb instantly into rice and cacao country.

The character

Settled, adult, unhurried. Restaurants close early, dive shops open early, and the lagoon fills with lotus in season.

Who it suits

Divers working the east coast sites, travellers pairing culture with calm, and round-island itineraries needing a night. Beach-first holidays will be disappointed and should know it in advance.
