Kuta travel guide

Kuta is where Bali tourism started, and the island has never quite decided what to do with it since. It is loud, cheap, dense and five minutes from the airport, with a beach that remains one of the best places anywhere to stand on a surfboard for the first time. Every criticism of it is accurate, and it still fills every night.

Where it is

Immediately north of the airport, the first stop on the southwest coast. The strip continues north through Legian and on into Seminyak without a visible border.

What it is now

Budget hotels and hostels, surf schools by the dozen, bars that run late, and the Beachwalk mall for the air-conditioned hours. The street grid inland is narrow, motorbike-saturated and best crossed with patience.

The beach

A long arc of sand with slow, forgiving waves in the shallows: this is the learner beach, and lessons cost less here than anywhere else on the coast. The same water carries currents once past waist depth, so the flag system is not a suggestion. Sunset is genuinely good, and free.

Who it suits

First-time surfers, overnight layovers, and budgets that would rather buy days of travel than thread count. Light sleepers and seekers of calm should board almost any bemo heading north or east.

Arriving and moving

Most visitors meet Indonesian bureaucracy for the first time at the airport next door: the four payments and filings are itemised in everything you must pay to enter. For the scooter everyone eventually rents, start with the permit question and what a stop can cost.
