Tanah Lot travel guide

Tanah Lot is a temple on a wave-cut rock off the Tabanan coast, and one of the most visited sites in Indonesia. It earns the visit at the right hour and punishes the wrong one, so this guide is mostly about timing.

Where it is

On the southwest coast about forty minutes north of Canggu, past the last of the surf villages. Most visitors come as a half-day from the southern resorts.

The site

The temple occupies its rock a short distance offshore, reachable on foot across the shelf at low tide, closed to non-worshippers inside but open around its base. The clifftop path north gives the classic view through the arched rock of Pura Batu Bolong, its smaller neighbour.

The timing problem

Sunset is the famous hour and the crowded one: coaches time their day around it. Early morning delivers the same rock, better light on the cliffs, and a site nearly to yourself. If sunset matters to you, arrive well before it and expect company measured in thousands.

Staying nearby

A small cluster of hotels serves the area, and the coast between here and Canggu hides quieter black-sand stretches at Nyanyi and Kedungu that reward a scooter detour.
