Nusa Dua travel guide

Nusa Dua is not a town. It is a managed resort enclave, master-planned in the 1970s, with gates, lawns and a beach kept as tidy as the hedges. Judged as a place to encounter Bali it fails; judged as a machine for an easy beach holiday it works better than anywhere else on the island.

Where it is

The eastern flank of the Bukit peninsula, twenty minutes from the airport. Inside the gated core sit the large resorts, a convention centre and a golf course; the workaday towns of Benoa and Tanjung Benoa lie just north.

The beaches

White sand, groomed daily, with reef-calmed water that swims well at most tides. The Water Blow, a gap in the limestone where swell explodes upward, provides the enclave's one moment of drama.

The character

Everything functions: pavements, lighting, security, taxis on demand. The trade is that restaurants and life outside resort walls are thin, and spontaneity needs a car. Ceremony and streetscape are elsewhere.

Who it suits

Conference travellers, multigenerational family holidays, honeymoons that want guarantees. Travellers who measure a trip by what they stumbled into should sleep in Sanur or Ubud instead.
