Bedugul travel guide

Bedugul is the highland basin around Lake Bratan, home of the most photographed temple on the island and of the cool, misty climate that surprises every first visitor. It is a day-trip staple that rewards the few who stay until the buses leave.

Where it is

In the central highlands on the main north road, about ninety minutes from the southern coast. The altitude keeps daytime temperatures spring-like and the evenings genuinely cold by Bali standards.

The temple

Pura Ulun Danu Beratan stands with its tiered merus on the lake edge, appearing to float when the water is high. It opens early: the difference between arriving at seven and arriving at ten is the difference between mist on the lake and coaches in the car park.

Around the lake

The Candikuning market sells the highlands' produce, strawberries included. The botanical garden above it is vast, old and quiet. Across the ridge lie the twin lakes and the road onward to Munduk, which pairs naturally with Bedugul in a single highland stay.

Who it suits

Photographers at first light, families wanting cool air, and anyone linking the south to the north coast. It is not a beach substitute and does not try to be.
